Artistically committed to the cause of animal rights for more than two decades, Sue Coe has recently turned her attention to the historically exploitative relationship between human beings and elephants. As evidenced by Circus Elephant Backstage, Coe implicitly equates elephants with exploited humans, impelling her viewer to recognize the circus as an injustice to all its performers, irrespective of species. Circus Elephant Backstage was part of the series ELEPHANTS WE MUST NEVER FORGET, on view at Galerie St. Etienne, October through December, 2008
