Cassius Clay is from a series of works on Malcolm X. The work depicts the first meeting between Cassius Clay and Malcolm X. The two met when Malcolm X came to see Clay fight. Clay was in the process of becoming a Muslim, and after talking with Malcolm, he re-named himself Mohammed Ali. This piece was not published in the Malcolm X book.
This work was awarded a prize at the 174th annual exhibition at the National Academy of Design, March 17–April 25, 1999.
