Ministry of Truth: 1984/2020 opened to the public the week of October 12, 2020. This public art exhibition presents 20 artists on 20 billboards located in the 5 boroughs of New York City. The exhibition is the first exhibition in outdoor space by Art at a Time Like This conceived in collaboration with Save Art Space. It features new designs by internationally renowned artists and fresh ideas from emerging talent, all responding to the harrowing state of U.S. politics leading up to the election.
With artists: Shirin Neshat, Dread Scott, Abigail de Ville, Marilyn Minter, Dan Perjovschi, Aaron Gilbert, Deborah Kass, Sue Coe, Akinbo Akinnouye, Guerrilla Girls BroadBand, Lola Flash, Angela Portillo, Rachel Hsu, Ruj Greigam, Mel Chin, Holly Martz, Terry Berkowitz, V.L. Cox, Helina Metaferia and Ileana Hernandez
Ministry of Truth: 1984/2020 is a reference to George Orwell’s dystopian novel in which a Ministry of Truth announces WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH, horrifyingly relevant in 2020. Inspired by this scenario, artists submitted an outpouring of ideas, ranging from bleak outlook on democracy to concerns about the divisiveness in political rhetoric today.
The project is sponsored by V. Hansmann, Jane Lombard Gallery, PPOW Gallery, Galerie St. Etienne, Guerrilla Girls BroadBand and Publicide Inc, with Hyperallergic as media sponsor.
A map of the billboards sited around the five boroughs of NYC can be found below to encourage viewers to take a self-guided tour to all the artworks.
