August: Shooting Stars Hear Coyotes, 2007
Typically working in lithography and etching, Coe started experimenting with woodcut in 2005. August: Shooting Stars Hear Coyotes is a departure from the politically charged work for which she is best known. Inspired by the artist’s home in upstate New York, August is part of an ongoing series depicting the months of the year. Furthering the connection to her rural environment, Coe’s blocks are hewn from fallen cherry trees near her cottage. Sue has written of this series:
‘Months’ were my first (crude) efforts at woodcut. Was looking at the work of a master - Shiko Munakata, and went within his vision of nature. He will always be a guide, even in the most blatant political work, he is there."Join our mailing list
