Typically working in lithography and etching, Sue Coe started experimenting with woodcut in 2005. June (Bears in the Cherry Tree) is a departure from the politically charged work for which Coe is best known. Inspired by the artist's home in upstate New York, Bears in the Cherry Tree is part of an ongoing series depicting the months of the year. This series of woodcuts shows the local flora and fauna of her country surroundings. Coe gets the wood for her woodblock prints from her neighbors in upstate New York. The simplicity of the materials, process and subject matter celebrates nature and reflects Coe's deep love of animals.
