White supremacy in America takes the form of routine harassment of people of color, where every routine traffic stop or any encounter with the police can turn deadly in a second. Political parties stoke white fear to get elected within an architecture of gerrymandering, stop and search, and the Electoral College. Systemic racism has reached such a pitch in the U.S. that children are being shot down for no reason other than they are Black. Blaming the victim is the oldest trick in the book for those who want to maintain power. In this painting I was showing the X to honor Malcolm and his struggle. —Sue Coe, February 3, 2021
